Candy Girl

Looking at the Spring/Summer 2012 collections it is quite evident that this season is marked by a return to a romantic and delicate form of femininity and that pastel shades are playing an important role in the revival.

This spring’s trendy hues are delicious like gelato and soft like macarons: baby blue, vanilla yellow, mint green, cotton candy pink, sorbet orange and lilac. The materials are vaporous, almost transparent, with touches of lace that emphasize the softness of the pastel outfit. The shapes are fluid and smooth, suggestive of an educated elegance.

Pastels can be worn as monochromatic looks or in combinations of two, maximum three shades – vanilla yellow with baby blue, light pink with mint green are the first two that come to mind. While I love the mix that Phillip Lim presented this season, I am on the edge about the number of pale tones that can be blended at one time without looking like a box of cupcakes. The touch of black or dark blue in the clutch helps break down the outfit though, removing some of the saccharine feel and creating what could become a classic look.

Spring Refresh

Pale green curtains and pillow accents wonderfully complement soft blue wingback chairs, giving this foyer both an elegant and cozy feel. ~

Season transitions usually encourage changes in both personal appearance and the look of our home. However, for financial or other non-monetary reasons, radical interior design alterations are not possible every time the weather patterns shift. Nevertheless, a few changes with great visual impact and on a low-budget are not unattainable.

Using a few pastel themed rooms for inspiration, I found that a little tempering with the bed linens and the curtains, together with a couple more porcelain or glass vases filled with tulips, ranunculus, and flowering branches could do the trick and satisfy my wish for a decor refresh.

~ The seafoam-blue duvet is beautifully grounded by tan accents, transforming this bedroom into a soothing place for daily rest. ~

~ A statement, flowery wall might be too big of a commitment, yet two pieces of wallpaper suspended vertically as works of art are an excellent and temporary solution. ~

Cold in Summer

I am one of those people who can feel cold in the middle of August. For this reason, sweaters occupy plenty of space in my closet and this traditional Aran knit piece from JCrew is one of them. It is soft and cozy and it can easily be dressed up with a lacey skirt and some key accessories, so I tend to reach for it often. For today’s outfit, I picked a few burnt orange wood bangles and a wood, stone and resin necklace to add just a hint of the tribal trend seen on the S/S 2012 runways.
